Stockholm Pride strongly condemns ban on Budapest Pride

Stockholm Pride strongly condemns the Hungarian government’s new law that effectively bans Budapest Pride. This legislation represents a direct attack on the fundamental rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and the principles of democracy and equality.

The new law is a blatant attempt to silence the voices of the LGBTQ+ community and suppress their right to peaceful assembly and expression. Budapest Pride has been a beacon of hope and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary and beyond. We deem any effort to ban or marginalise it as unacceptable.

”We stand in solidarity with our friends and allies in Budapest and across Hungary,” said Michal Budryk, president for Stockholm Pride. ”The right to celebrate our identities and advocate for our rights is non-negotiable in a democratic society. We call on the international community to join us in condemning this proposed law and to support the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary.”

“Stockholm Pride joins the large group of LGBTQ+ organisations in Europe and worldwide in urging the Hungarian government to withdraw this discriminatory legislation immediately and to uphold the rights of all its citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Mats Nordström, president of Stockholm Pride Solidarity Fund. “We also call on the European Union and other international bodies to take decisive action to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Hungary and across Europe.”
